Taste Testing different varieties of heritage apples
Taste Tests / Tastings were a favorite activity among our students. Whether we were sampling heirloom tomatoes, apples, or NH Farm to School’s Harvest of the Month fruit or vegetable, youngsters found these experiences very engaging and worthwhile in terms of relevance for life beyond school. They also enjoyed sharing their impressions with their peers. Almost everyone had something to report and there were no worries about being right or wrong: the uniqueness of everyone’s taste was something we could talk about and even celebrate!
Here you’ll see photos of heirloom apples that were being offered (and often grown!) at Lull Farm in Hollis, NH. These photographs were taken during the twenty-teens. Note the wide-ranging, very informative labels that this farmstand provided for customer education. We considered these labels to be both beneficial and helpful!
Below you’ll find a chart that we used for taste testing activities. Part of its purpose is to expand children’s awareness and spectrum of taste.
